This Looks Like Something A 5th Grader Made…
I am in the middle of doing the #30daydovetailchallenge This is where I hand cut a dovetail joint every day for an entire month in an attempt to improve my skills Today is day 15 Up to today I have only done practice joints I have never made a project using dovetails nore have I ever made anything using only hand tools. You see I have a lot of hand tools but the truth is I never use them, The power tools in my shop are a lot easier to use and for the most part require a fair amount less effort so naturally they get the majority of my attention and as a result of this my skills with my hand tool skills have never developed. This is why I’m doing the #30daydovetailchallenge. The point of the challenge is to build hand tool skills and develop the confidence I need to make projects using them while forming a positive habit of getting into the shop regularly to make something. Now I don’t feel ready to make a project using only hand tools, my joints up to this point haven’t been the best and I still have a long ways to go before I would call my self good at cutting dovetails, but I likely never will feel totally ready so I am going to force myself to make a Basic Dovetail Pencil Box With a Sliding Lid.
What's Your Why?
For this project I am going to make something I have already made, Not only have I already made one of these EDC trays but it was actually one of my more recent videos. The truth is this project isn’t about the project its self but more about just getting out into the shop and breaking a cycle of not putting in my time in here. I love having a shop and I have worked very hard to acquire all the tools in here and set up this space the way I want it but as life goes sometimes my focus ends up elsewhere and less of my free time ends up in the shop than I maybe want. I wanted a win today,, I needed an easy project that I don’t overdo and can possibly finish the same day I start.

Concrete and Walnut Coffee Table
I set a goal a long time ago to build all of the furniture in my house. When we moved in 2020 I threw out everything we own that I didn’t build. It was really refreshing to let that stuff go. Slowly I am designing and building pieces we need one at a time. Here is a coffee table I build out of concrete and walnut. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed the process!
Stair Tread Jig
I while back my buddy asked me if I could help him make a stair tread jig for a finishing job he had going, I’ll be honest I didn’t even know what that was so I took to google to figure it out before committing…… Wait thats not true, I totally committed to the project before I even knew what it was that I was supposed to build. Fortunately Google sent me off in the right direction and in a short time I had a basic design worked out in Sketchup, well actually 2 basic designs. Design A where the main body of the jig is dovetailed to stay together without any fasteners and design B exactly the same but with a dado in place of the dovetail Below are images from Design A (Dovetail) It appears I somehow deleted the Sketchup file for design B which is Ironic because that is the file that the final project was built off.
Once the design was settled I started off I used 1 x 2 inch maple stock and made the whole thing out of one piece. After cutting the outside base piece to width I hollowed out the Dado using a 3/4 inch dado bit on my router table,
Next I cut the two inside Pieces to fit and routed the groove for the 1/4 20 carriage bolts and knobs to go.
As you can see in the photo above I have also cut the end pieces as well as cut the grooves for the carriage bolts recessed so the head of the both is completely countersunk.
Now you can see the 5 pieces before I stained them with the Danish Oil, in hindsight I would not use this again because it doesn’t really Harden completely, next time I build one of these I will use Wipe On Poly, I prefer the finish of that and it dries to a hard finish.
Concrete and Plywood Lamp
It's dark in the Yukon. For most of the winter the sun is only above the horizon for about 5 hours a day so we need LOTS of lights. I decided to build one out of Concrete, Plywood and Walnut to sit on my desk. Here you go!
Making a FLOATING SHELF w/ EPOXY Inlay || diy plywood furniture
I have long been a fan of modern plywood furniture, the design possibilities are absolutely endless. We needed a new coat rack/shelf for our entry way in our house. This was a good opportunity to build out a design I had been working on for a while and practice kerf bending some plywood. There were some struggles with this project but in the end it was well worth the time I put into it!
Colored Pencil Growth Chart
I wanted a growth chart ruler to measure my daughter as she grows up. I was going to make one out of walnut and maple but then I decided to use colored pencils and make a truly one of a kind growth chart ruler that will become a family heirloom and hopefully be passed down for generations to come! This growth chart is 7 feet long and 6 inches wide and just over an inch thick.
It takes approximately 100 colored pencils cut into 1 inch long bits to make up a 6 inch by 6 inch square. This has 1400 pencils in it that are cut into 5 pieces each making that about 7000 pencil bits in total! This turned out better than I could have ever imagined.

I Made A Pencil Box From 100 Colored Pencils
#epoxycoloredpencils #epoxyart #pencilbox
I wanted to see what I could make with 1 box of colored pencils. This project was made with 100 colored pencils. In the video you will see me dump out two boxes but they were 50 packs. I recommend using the Crayola 100 Pack because the pencils are really good quality and when you cut them they don't splinter as bad as a cheaper brand. Also the 100 pack has an excellent range of colours!
There is a certain level of irony in using pencils to make a pencil box but it also brings a unique quality to a hand made project.

Simple Concrete Planter with a Wood Inlay
I have always loved concrete, there are an endless amount of possibilities that you can do with this medium, that and when you combine it with a modern style and a little creativity you can end up with something truly unique and beautiful. I wanted a small planter that would fit nicely in the centre of a table or sit comfortably on a shelf. (This planter sits at 12’ x 8” x 4”) Something with a modern feel that would perfectly fit a succulent or small plant. I also wanted to try inlaying a wood accent piece to see how that would look and I am really happy with how it turned out. This is what I came up with I hope you like this project as much as I did making the planter!
